Certain things that hearing people take for granted
present a great deal of difficulty for the Deaf and the
Hard of Hearing. For example, how does a person with a
hearing impairment know when the phone or doorbell is
ringing? The solution may be simpler than you thought
and it's within most people's reach.
I'm talking about signalers--also known as
signaling
or alerting devices--which can be used to
notify you of everyday sounds, such as the doorbell, the
telephone ring, or a baby's cry, by turning on and off
lamps in your home or signaling a vibrator to alert you.
Some models have a built-in lamp while others may
require that you plug one of your own lamps. Often, the
light on/off pattern will help you identify which sound
is present.
Signalers may also be used to indicate the presence
of smoke or carbon monoxide, loud sirens (such as from
emergency vehicles), and for weather conditions.
All these options are available in our online store.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A
SIGNALER:
How big is your home?
You'll want a different type of signaler in a dorm-room
than would be needed in a 2-bedroom home. In smaller
areas, individual signalers (especially with small
strobe options) work best. In multi-room homes, consider
remote receivers that allow you to be notified
throughout your house. Some signaling systems are even
designed to allow you the flexibility to add on
components as your needs change.
Do you want to choose individual signalers to fit
your specific needs or would you prefer an all-in-one
system?
All-in-one systems may cover most of your needs, but
individual signalers give you more flexibility.
Consider what sounds you want to be alerted to, then
choose specific signalers or an all-in-one system that
matches.
Don't forget those little areas like hallways or
bathrooms!
Look for signalers that can alert you no matter where
you are.
